Grape Lab x Joanne

Collaboration story

Grape Lab is a sustainable design studio doing various experiments to solve environmental and social issues from a design point of view. Finding the hidden values of disposed materials and minorities, Grape Lab creates a structure like grape vines, where everyone grows together.

In 2022, Grape Lab invited Joanne Lee, an emerging abstract painter who lives with complex disability in South Australia, to collaborate with their new product range, Smart G.stand.

“We asked Joanne to paint with us, and Joanne replied with bright colours in swirling brushstrokes. Maybe we’re only seeing the world from a non-disabled perspective. By overcoming the hurdle of disability, we will see how the world could be more beautiful.”

“Ray Birdwhistell, an anthropologist, concluded in his research that less than 30% of communication was through words. The rest was through tone, expression, and body language. As Joanne and we communicated through painting, art enables a new method of communication beyond verbal expression.”
